QUALITY BREWING

For over 222 years, Molson has been brewing beer, according to the highest possible standards of quality.

Our brewing methods are rooted in a tradition of quality, based on combining the very finest natural ingredients, utilizing the best brewing methods available, and relying on the expertise of our skilled brewmasters. As a result, we brew beers that continually satisfy our customers.

Checks to ensure a high standard of quality

Molson conducts an exhaustive number of quality checks on every brew it produces. This constant attention to detail ensures that we maintain a high standard of quality at every step in the brewing process. Highly trained employees perform three kinds of analysis at each brewing stage: microbiological, analytical and sensory (taste tests). In fact, our expert tasters sample and approve each and every tank of beer before it is released for sale.

Our quest for quality continues beyond the brewery

We monitor the quality of our beer even after it leaves our breweries. Molson's Retail Quality Team routinely visits the many thousands of stores, restaurants and bars where our beer is sold. The team also monitors the quality of our beer in Molson distribution centres across Canada and the United States. We check products for freshness, examine packaging and monitor stock rotation to ensure that the products delivered to consumers always meet our exacting standards of quality, whether it’s bottled, canned or draft beer.

Suppliers must meet our high standards

The Molson Supplier Quality program ensures that we use only the best quality ingredients and materials to make our beers. Each of our suppliers must pass a rigorous quality audit before we approve their products. Only then do they receive the Molson Approved Supplier designation. From then on, we continue to be vigilant in monitoring the ingredients and materials that go into our brews to ensure consistent quality.

Expert tasters test every brew

Molson employs several teams of expert beer tasters whose job is to taste and evaluate our beers at every step of the brewing process, in all of our breweries, thus ensuring that we continue to deliver a consistently high quality brew to customers from coast to coast. Most of our testers are employees in our Brewing, Quality, Packaging and Sales departments who have passed a rigorous in-house taste training program. These experts taste analyze everything that goes into the brewing of our beers, including the basic raw materials such as water, malt, hops and yeast.

Our search for new taste experiences is ongoing

We’re always looking for ways to provide consumers with new taste experiences.  In Toronto, we operate the Molson Pilot Brewery where our brewmasters develop new recipes, improve existing ones and qualify new raw materials. Even though it's a small scale brewery, the trial brewing facility duplicates every brewing step used in the large scale breweries. It also boasts a state-of-the-art analytical and microbiological laboratory where we can analyze our trial brews.

Brewmastering - A long Molson tradition

Over our long history, Molson has developed an in-house brewer training program that is very effective. The program allows us to pass on the tradition of Molson quality from generation to generation of Molson brewmasters. Many of our brewers come to Molson with an education in engineering, biology or chemistry. In addition to receiving formal training from Molson, each brewer is partnered with a mentor - usually a brewmaster with many years experience.

Molson hires brewers into a two-year apprenticeship program that covers every aspect of the brewing business from handling raw materials to making deliveries. During the program, apprentices perform nearly every job in the brewery. Only when their mentors deem them ready do they proceed to the next step.

In addition to hands-on training, apprentice brewers follow a rigorous study program to learn the more technical aspects of brewing. Some apprentices also attend specialized brewing schools located in the U.S., Germany and England.

After finishing their apprenticeships, brewers rotate through various brewery positions to gain practical knowledge and experience. Their work experience and continued on-the-job learning prepares them to mentor the next generation of Molson brewers.
